One Way Table

Definition of Data Table
We can define Data Table as the visual orderly storage of the data and information, which is contained in a computer database for easy access. The data table is made up of rows and columns. The rows and columns are labeled.

Parts of a Data Table
The parts of a data table comprises of the data table’s title, the measuring unit of the numeric data, the independent variable, the dependent variable or formula.  During analysis of the data, the value of the independent variable is changed and analyzed to check how corresponding changes occur in the dependent variable.  The results obtained will be accurate when compared to manual calculation as these data tables are created by using latest computer technology.

Data Table Types
The data tables are of two types. The number of variables for which the data are collected in data tables clearly indicates the type of data table. The two types of data tables are one variable data table and two variable data table. In this article, let us discuss about the 1 way table.

One Way Table
The one variable data table, which is also termed as one way Data table is equivalent to bar chart.  In 1 way table, the data collected in the table refers to only one variable. Similar to the bar chart, the categorical data are displayed in the 1 way table in the form of relative frequencies or frequency counts or both. Analysis of changes in data using simple modifications is possible in 1 way table.

Relative frequency table is the name given to the one way table formed for a categorical variable. This relative frequency table is used to show the relative frequencies such as percentages or proportions for particular categories of that variable.  Care should be taken to correctly identify the percentages, proportions and frequencies.

How to Create One Way Table?
One way data table can be maintained in Excel.  While creating 1 way table, first step is to decide whether the input values of the variable have to be written column-wise or row-wise.  Once the input cell of the variable is decided, the dependent formula which refers to the input cell is typed in the cell corresponding to the input cell. If the inputs are column oriented, the formula will be written in the next column, in the row above the first input cell.  If the data table is row oriented, then the formula is written in the next row of the input cell, in the previous column in the left.  The range of cells in which the formula and the input values are set is selected and in the Data menu of excel, the option Table is selected followed by column or row input cell option. This creates the data table. If the value of the input cell changes, the value of the cell having the dependent formula also changes and thus helps in analysis.

Example of One Way Table
If there is a change in the rate of interest, then the loan amount will also change. Thus the rate of interest is the variable.  A person repaying the loan can then analyze the loan amount he has to pay if the interest rate changes, by changing the value of the rate of interest variable. The loan amount should also be present in the data table.
